Plum Island Update
October 2, 2013 Boaters have long known to avoid Plum Island, home of the “Plum Island Animal Disease Center”. As young adults, crossing through Plum Gut, we would joke about two headed cattle and the “rule” to hold your breath while passing down wind. Today the 840 acre island, under the watchful eye of Homeland Security, may be up for sale and the laboratory moved to Manhattan, Kansas. The island is officially “a United States federal research facility dedicated to the study of animal diseases” and is part of the DHS Directorate for Science and Technology. Acquired during the Spanish – American war, the island had a fort constructed on it “Fort Terry” as an ammo depot. Used to study Hoof and Mouth Disease by the government, it was taken over in 1952 by the Army Chemical Corps and it became home to Dr. Erich Traub, a German scientist brought to the US by “Operation Paperclip” (which also brought Wernher von Braun to the US) to participate in the research in anti-animal biological warfare. Traub had been working in Germany on infecting an insect army of ticks with diseases and allowing them to infect opponent’s livestock ! With it’s secretive history, Plum Island is suspected by many to be the source of outbreaks of three infectious diseases: West Nile virus in 1999, Lyme disease in 1975, and Dutch duck plague in 1967 The current plans are to move the lab to Kansas (See Links Below), where it is to be called the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, and auction off the Island to the highest bidder. Understandably, Suffolk County, the New York Audubon Society, CT Fund for the Environment and Save the Sound are opposed, hoping to see much of the island become a nature sanctuary.
